Film FESTIVALS

18º Festival de Audiovisual de Campina Grande.

Museo de Arte Popular da Paraiba, Campina Grande, Brasil.

This selection has enormous meaning for me. Paraíba is the place where the story of the film Matchbox took place in 1922, and without the Digital Archive of the Federal University of Paraíba its execution would not have been possible.

When creating projects deeply linked to a place, it is essential to know if there is a resonance with the land and people of the place from which an art project emerged. Presenting this film in any other city without a screening in Paraíba would have no meaning for me. Knowing that this film will be shown, interacted with and received in Paraíba is a confirmation that this story deserves to be told. Thank you very much to the entire curatorial committee.

The 18º Festival de Audiovisual de Campina Grande will take place between the 3rd and 17th of December, and will address the theme “Cinema in Super 8: Experimentations and Fruitions”.

Matchbox will be exhibited at the folkart museum Museo de Arte Popular da Paraíba, known as "Museu dos Três Pandeiros", the last building designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer based in the city of Campina Grande during this festival.

portugal indie film Festival 2023

best artist film award official selection

Nazare, Portugal

Matchbox has been selected to be part of Portugal Indie Film Festival and I am one of the films nominated in the Best Short Artist Film category. The award-winning films will be screened at the historic Nazaré cinema in Portugal in February 2024 Good luck to all the films participating.

This story has many layers, but the core of the short film MATCHBOX is this: as one of the finalists in a 1922 Era Magazine beauty contest, my maternal grandmother would be awarded with her photo printed on matchboxes. Engaged at 15 years, her future husband did not approve of such an award.

She closed the engagement on May 13 claiming her freedom and exclaimed: "On this day slavery was abolished" - referring to the naive historical perspective that the signing of a law on May 13, 1888 freed the enslaved populations in Brazil from systemic expectation and imposition of submission, inferiority and servitude.

A lot has changed.

I encourage you to visit their Instagram account and see the story Ladies Drawing Club founder just shared, and spread their work, their artists and publications. Here is part of a message sent today. Read in full on their Instagram stories.

“All the people I know in Russia are people who have always voted against this government in the country, who fought for their constitution, who fought for their freedom. There are people who are against the war! We are all against this war! We are ashamed and hurt.

I love the world and every city on earth. I work with people from different parts of the world and I love it. It’s amazing to know how different we are and how similar we are. I am happy that during the existence of the club I was able to meet amazing curators and artists. We became close by doing the same thing. It’s amazing how many opportunities there are for people who love the world and strive for its development. And how precious It is that we can meet on our travels, move, exchange cultures.

I Believe this ends now!

Please

João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil.

During this fall season I attended the workshop: “Plants feel: self-portraiture and Clorophyll Prints” on alternative methods of printing using plants as emulsions or support. These techniques were introduced to me by a Brazilian artist and professor Liz Vasc.

Being part of the lively conversations in Portuguese spiced with the delicious accent of Northeastern Brazil from participating students and my “Paraibana” instructor were as soothing as the process of interacting with the essence and beings of the plant kingdom.

REAL PHOTO SHOW with Michael Chovan-Dalton

I started 2022 with a group show at JKCGallery and I am closing this year with an interview by it’s director and RealPhotoShow podcast host and producer Michael Chovin-Dalton.

I am so honored to be one of the voices in photography welcomed to this podcast to exchange tales and perils of pursuing a life dedicated to this craft and share our latest works in photography.

When I first set foot at JKCGallery It was obvious Michael Chovin-Dalton had established a one of a kind space for photography in central New Jersey. In my 20 years living here, I had never encountered such a space before - I had found a home and my kin. Unfortunately JKCGallery just closed its doors, but the mark and the memory of it will be carried by many. Thank you Michael and curator Ryan Cassey for your dedication to this space.

But the show will go on. Here is the realphotoshow.

Please listen and share.

Obrigada a toda equipe @pefparatyemfoco

I am celebrating the inclusion of my work Conceptives on Contemporary Identities - issue #7 an independent quarterly Art magazine. Through short art reviews from scholars, art writers and art critics ContemporaryIdentities offers a space for experimental and progressive contemporary artists.

Efforts by Iranian artist Dr. Elham Shafaei and Italian artist, Sara Berti to establish multicultural dialogues through the creation of this publication have been recognized by the inclusion of ContemporaryIdentities into the Arts and Society Database - a collective of various institutions to promote Arts and the Humanities, including UNESCO-MOST. This database intends to map multidisciplinary cooperation utilizing arts as tools for critical thinking and social transformation.

LANDSCAPE STORIES Blog #30

Project MINE_IRA is being featured on Landscape Stories. This is an independent Italian publication created in 2010 that has since established itself as a relevant channel to the presentation of fine art contemporary photography.

The proposal of their current issue #30 is on Archives. The librarian in me is delighted to be part of it.

The archive fulfills the fundamental function of conservation, selection and accessibility. All of us then, voluntarily or not, always glean from the personal archive, buried and at rest in the immaterial rooms of our memory. Taking for granted the value of collective expression of a community's cultural memory, art in its best cases is capable of causing short circuits or inspiring reflections. When did we start to get interested in archives? Why does contemporary photographic research frequently make use of reinterpretation of archival materials? Which roles, meanings and forms has the archive issue assumed in contemporary practice? The results are changeable: from the vernacular to private family albums, from the object trouvé to mixed media.”

URBANAUTICA | Journal of Visual Anthropology

MINE_IRA is now part of the archives of @urbanautica journal - an independent publisher in Italy working on photography, visual anthropology and cultural landscapes created by Steve Bisson. Thank you for the special mention on such a relevant subject : EXTINCTION. OR THE WORLD WITHOUT US?

“Works regarding a pressing problem of crucial importance. Human destruction of the living world is causing a “frightening” number of plant and animal extinctions, according to a growing number of scientists, studies, publications, and reports. In the last century, the awareness that human activities are harmful to the environment, to life in general, including that of humans has increased. Wars, climate change, diseases, pollution, technological escalation, deforestation are just some of the threats that challenge the survival of the species.
A great deal of literature and cinema have also contributed to this dystopian vision of the future. Even to imagine a "world without us". For these reasons, we are eager to discover and spread photographic and/or visual projects that nourish, document, develop, interpret, tell and question the theme of extinction.”

SUTURED RESILIENCE

Artworks Trenton Visual Art Center, New Jersey.

The group art exhibition, “Sutured Resilience,” brought together three female artists, Jennifer Cabral, Kat Cope, and Chanika Svetvilas, who explore trauma, memory, and empowerment. Together the artists hold space for the community to witness transformation, healing and the search for resolution.

Each artist’s unique narrative traces their lived experience of trauma to re-envision a healing journey. This multifaceted and multi-media exhibition gave the viewers the opportunity to explore narratives of trauma with empathy and a vehicle to share space with those who identify with the challenges and healing power of resilience.

In additions to An artist talk, a community workshop was offered by the artists. At the “Quilting Stories” workshop led by artist Chanika Svetvilas, she invited those impacted by mental health difference and/or trauma whether personally or by friends and family, to create art that exploreD the lived experience, stigma and methods of support. The participants had the opportunity to share their creations in a collective installation in the Trenton Artworks Community Gallery.

For the last day of the exhibition Sutured Resilience the artists wanted to create a spontaneous, interactive, and renewing gallery experience - an offering left behind to the community that visited Artworks Gallery in Trenton, New Jersey.

The soundscape available in the gallery was made possible by the collaboration with visual artist and musician Doreen Kirchner. Kirchner mixed spoken words by Chanika Svetvilas, the Irish Bohram drums of Kat Cope and the chanting and drumming sounds by Jennifer Cabral. Permeated by bird songs the recording produced by Kirchner became simultaneously stimulating and soothing to those who were present.

The artists wanted to give the impression they had just been present in the gallery and a healing ceremony was taking place, welcoming visitors into an enveloping healing space. Individual bags with flower petals, including an egg shaker, was made available to visitors, so they could join the rhythm of the audio and scatter flower petals where they would like to leave an offering to a work of art that resonates with them as a way to ground their experience.

”No words. Words form from thought.
Written words do not have the same meaning when spoken.

Words only describe.

There are no words in pain and sorrow. Words can give hope, comfort and joy.

And take it away.

I want to understand how to find words to accompany my feelings.

I find sanctuary in kindness.

Words will describe my remembrance.”

~ Chanika Svetvilas

If you would like to immerse yourself in this soundscape experience, here are the same guidelines we provided to the audience. Sound on. Preferably loud.

“Take a moment to listen and observe. Use this time to ground yourself in your body. When you feel ready, join the sound recording: you can chant, clap or move. There is no right or wrong way.”

SUTURED RESILIENCE PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

Sutured Resilience invites the public to imagine a reality where strength is found in vulnerability expressed through text, photography, sculpture, drawing, mixed media, installation, video and participatory actions.

Kat Cope - Cope’s research focuses on building protective armour as a healing act connected to metaphorical protection in order to process unresolved childhood trauma through wearable sculpture, performance and video. Her objective is to examine how adults who have experienced trauma in childhood create physical and emotional boundaries against pain and vulnerability. She visually communicates these boundaries by constructing protective armour as a defense against further pain, such as, the “Blinder Collar” worn in her performance “Cut it Out Suck it Up”. The armour collar also becomes a trap limiting the movement and healing of the individual. Cope’s visual experimentations explore through the act of making, recording and performing the peeling away of these layers to allow for healing. https://www.katcope.com/

Chanika Svetvilas - Svetvilas’ interdisciplinary work explores her lived experience of mental health difference as someone with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, the impact of the stigma and discrimination encountered and the slippage between the medical diagnosis, intersectional identity, and disability justice. In her large scale drawings she uses charcoal as a transformative material that in its activated form absorbs chemicals. Printed medical texts and research studies, are reproduced by hand and juxtaposed with collage and motifs to magnify and question the contradictions of the generic information with personal experience. Marks and smears from the drawing process resist to be contained by the page and print boundaries. Her contorted prescription bottle sculptures reflect distortions from side effects; adornment of acrylic gems and gold chains conveys the inaccessibility of big pharma; and combined found objects express the complicated relationship with prescription meds and endless cycles of care. https://chanikasvetvilas.com/

Jennifer Cabral’s “Borderline: A Manifesto" series of silver-gelatin prints juxtaposes the American Southern Border traced onto a body with the intervention of a red pen. Borderline emerged from two very impactful events - one geopolitical in which a continuous wall was proposed to be erected on the southern border of the United States that questioned the rights of the Latinx community to reside in this country. The second one was personal in which Cabral’s own chest had been marked with a pen, to delineate the area that the surgical knife would make by the removal of her left breast due to cancer. In Cabral’s “MINE” series, she delves further uncovering traumatic childhood experiences of abuse and betrayal while equating the violation with the mining exploitation of Brazilian mountains for iron ore. The play with the word, “mine,” both noun and possessive pronoun is transposed onto a family archive of photos. The Serra Curral Del Rey’s slopes are outlined  from her childhood memory, a mountain ridge in Cabral’s hometown of Belo Horizonte.

Exhibition Sutured Resilience multimedia and multifaceted installations at Artworks in Trenton, NJ.

Artworks Exhibition Committee has chosen the exhibition “Sutured Resilience” based on it’s aesthetic and curatorial focus to occupy this space during the summer of 2021. Artists Kat Cope, Chanika Svetvilas and Jennifer Cabral will coordinate online events and a physical exhibit following safety protocals for the New Jersey Community of Mercer County.

Once a Sears Department Store warehouse ready to be demolished, the building was preserved and turned into an arts center. Remarkably, this warehouse was spared and since 1988, Artworks has operated art classes, studios and exhibit spaces in this preserved space.

Unique minds, Creative voices

Princeton University, NJ

The exhibition “Unique minds, Creative voices” presents artworks that translate the importance of mental health awareness and the significance of destigmatizing neurodiversity and mental illness.

This exhibition is part of Princeton University’s Mental Health Awareness Month, happening throughout campus and has a special emphasis on the importance of mental wellness and self-care during the current Pandemic.

My series of photographs MEMBRANES will be part of this virtual 3D exhibit and in a printed exhibition catalogue. These photographs address the fear of mutual contamination and necessary social distancing during the current pandemic and it’s emotional impact, specially heightened for immune-deficient individuals. MEMBRANES is part of a series of works called I wash my hands I’ve been creating throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The opening of this virtual exhibition was marked by a discussion among the artists. Nov 9, 2020 and the printed catalog to be released in Dec. 2020.

Galeria zona creativa MAC - 1er piso

My work Borderline Manifesto is being included on the first edition of Memento proyecto A preview of this project was showcased at Museo de Arte Contemporânea de Puerto Rico. Borderline Manifesto was shown alongside 8 other Latin American artists.

Məˈmenˌtō; is a cultural and curatorial project dedicated to the propagation, preservation and study of contemporary photography of caribean and latin american artists. Presented as a series of postcards, this projects emerges after six months of studies in the Programa de Estudios Independientes del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico. The first edition being published is Vaivén: Dede la Migración y la Estancia.

The announcement of this ongoing cultural project took place at the Museo de Arte Contemporânea de Puerto Rico which reinforces the bonds of culture between and among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean basin, as well as the Latinx communities and the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States.

Founded in 1984, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC) was born out of the will of Puerto Rican artists and cultural workers who recognized the urgency to create an alternate model for exhibiting contemporary art and its issues. The MAC is the only institution in the island expressly dedicated to the study, collection, preservation, exhibition and promotion of art produced since the mid-20th century in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Latin America, and its diasporas.

I will be showing my work Visual Conceptives at BROOKLYN FIREPROOF in East Williamsburg during E.S.P. | Extra-Sensorial Perception | a Feminist Art & Variety Show. A show.

This show had been cancelled for lack of support by the original venue that was opposed to it’s goal: to raise money to Planned Parenthood and www.womanspace.org – a non-profit organization in NJ dedicated to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

We are now achieving what curator Doris Yuan originally proposed: to create a platform for emerging feminist artists and establish a link between artists and communities. Thirty artists from various parts of the country, will be participating of a group exhibition and during opening night there will be a series of music and comedy performances.

SETE DIAS DEPOIS - SOLO EXHIBITION

PUC - MINAS

8 a 30 de Setembro, 2011

Departamento de Comunicação - Prédio 13 - 3° andar

Av. Dom José Gaspar, 500 - Coração Eucarístico. Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil.

CURATION Project: “Capturing Feathers”

Princeton University Library, US

A new digital Princeton University Library (PUL) exhibition explores the bird imagery in the Library’s Digital Repository and highlights the importance of birds as an indicator species, serving as one of nature’s primordial messengers of climate change.

Titled “Capturing Feathers,” this exhibition is inspired by the work of Charles H. Rogers (Class of 1909), curator of Princeton University's ornithological collection from 1920-1977. The personal bird journals of Charles Rogers, which span a period of seventy years, are being digitized as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and the PULDigital Imaging Studio.

Digital Imaging Technician and designer of the online exhibition Jennifer Cabral-Pierce curated the virtual display, which showcases PUL’s initial digitization efforts of source materials that will eventually generate invaluable data for climate change, conservation, and biodiversity studies.

- Read complete announcement on Princeton University Library’s website.

To fully experience the pages of each book I highly recommend a computer screen and not a device. And yes, you can even see the rich details of a Gutenberg Bible page by page.
