ART COLLECTIVE & PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH

MADONNAS & FRIDAS

Jennifer Cabral is part of this art collective bringing together 50 women artists who explore motherhood through Photography from across Brazil who engage with themes of contemporary motherhood in their photographic practice.

More than just an exhibition or a research initiative, it is an ongoing, collaborative journey that unfolds over three years, fostering deep artistic exchange, experimentation, and visibility. The project seeks to create a vibrant, supportive artistic community that not only shares work but also collectively builds knowledge, challenges dominant narratives, and reclaims space in the visual arts for diverse expressions of maternal experience.

The upcoming publication Madonnas and Fridas includes research, critical reflection and textual and photographic production on art and motherhood as political agencies. Along with this publication, workshops, video art, and online platforms will serve as stages for these voices to resonate. By connecting women artists across regions and realities, this initiative affirms photography as a living, dynamic field for feminist expression, where motherhood becomes not a limitation, but a powerful lens through which to reflect on the world—and reshape it.

This Brazilian project is supported by the Marc Ferrez Photography Award - 17th Edition - FUNARTE and was conceived by Ana Sabiá, visual artist and researcher, PhD in Visual Arts and master in Social Psychology.
